Planning Your Staycation

Spring break is right around the corner! Don’t have a budget for a big family vacation? Fear not! There are a many fun things you can do to make sure that you and your kids still have a fun break, filled with memories.

Here are a few tips to help you plan your next staycation.

Become a Local Tourist

How many times have you been asked by a person from out of town, “Oh! Have you ever done…” in your hometown? Are there local attractions, businesses, government operations, or things you’ve never done that you’d like to do that are still close to home?

Examples might be:

  • Museums
  • Mints or large factories
  • Zoos or other parks
  • Trails or paths
  • Restaurants that provide a tour
  • Historic landmarks

Try New Foods

Whether it’s trying a new restaurant or cooking at home, eating together is a great way to build memories. You might even try dedicating each day of the staycation to a different type of cuisine: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

You might try foods from countries like:

  • India
  • China
  • Switzerland
  • Mexico
  • Brazil
  • Italy
  • Ghana

Do your research and have fun with this!

Take on a Family Project at Home

Is there a project that the whole family can pitch in on? Painting the garage or planting a tree? Sometimes it’s a great team-builder to do an activity together that has tangible results.

Play Games

Try a game night or two! Pop some popcorn, get candy, put on a favorite movie in the background and play a bunch of games. They can be simple like pictionary or can be long board games like Monopoly.

Stay in a Local Hotel

It might be fun to spend at least one or two nights in a local hotel! Swim in the pool, get some snacks at cocktail hour, and have fun letting someone else do the cleaning and cooking!

Camp in Your Yard

You don’t need to purchase all of the survival gear needed for other camping trips when you’re just in your backyard! See if you can borrow a tent from a friend or find one online. You can roast marshmallows, tell stories, sing songs, and play lots of games.

What are some of your favorite stay-cation activities?
