Preparing Your Summer Garden

Summer is just around the corner and it’s a great time to grow healthy fruits, vegetables, and even flowers! Having a garden is a wonderful way to practice stewardship and to take in the lessons that God has for us to learn from nature. From a health perspective: you know exactly what kind of chemicals have, or have not, touched your food and you’re in control it! As an added bonus when you grow your own food: you get to share your bounty with your friends and family! Neighbors and friends love getting baskets of food or lovely flowers when your crops product too much!

If you’re hoping to grow plants from seeds, it may be a little too late to start in May. However, your local plant nursery or hardware store probably has some low-cost starters that will be perfect for your garden. Often high yielding plants include:

  • Tomato
  • Zucchini
  • Jalapeno
  • Beets
  • Bell peppers
  • Cucumber
  • Eggplant
  • Certain types of lettuce and other leafy greens
  • Corn
  • Bean
  • Shallot
  • Potato
  • Watermelon

If you’re like to plant a tree for fruit to start growing next year, you might be able to grow the following types of fruit:

  • Lime
  • Lemon
  • Avocado
  • Plum
  • Peach
  • Or even berries from bushes

Before you start, make sure that you know what zone you’re in. The USDA has mapped out all areas of the United States to help you know what kinds of plants will flourish (or not) in your area. To find out what zone you’re in, click here.

Whatever you decide to grow, make sure that you check out recipes online and do your research to find out what you need to do to protect your plants from animals, bugs, and disease. If you’re not able to find out what to do online, talk to your local plant specialist at the local nursery near you.
