Spring Cleaning and Your Health

Did you know that even if you haven’t been diagnosed with seasonal allergies that the quality of cleanliness in your home can impact you health in very serious ways? As the seasons change, it’s time to get some spring cleaning done! Of course you’ll do some dusting, wash your linens, wipe down things like the baseboards, etc., but have you considered any of the following ideas to improve your health?

Remove Clutter — Permanently

While too much clutter can cause a feeling of emotional overwhelm, it’s also likely hiding unwanted dust, pollen, and germs. Take one day each week to tackle a project like getting rid of clothing you don’t wear, recycle old magazines and books you don’t need, and make sure that all food areas (your counter, pantry, stove, microwave, and fridge) get a good wipe down so that spills, residue, etc., is removed. Additionally, once clutter is removed for good, it’s much easier to keep your home clean.

Switch to a Non-Toxic Cleaner

While you might need some of the heavy-duty cleaners for some areas of your house to remove germs, consider looking into more environmentally friendly, non-toxic cleaning products. Often these not only help the environment, but also positively impact your health. You’d be amazed what lemons, salt, vinegar, baking soda, and other non-toxic items can clean!

Change Air Filters

Changing your air filters four times a year is recommended. Especially in the spring and fall months, consider getting a filter that also prevents pollen from getting into your home.

If you’ve noticed that you’ve been coughing or sneezing quite a bit, you might also want to consider an air purifier at least in your bedroom. Many people don’t realize this, but there may be years worth of dust and debris in your vents–which means that you’re breathing that in every single day. Consider having a professional come by to clean out your air ducts.
