What the Bible Says About Senior Living

Sadly, many Americans don’t have much respect for older people. Many Christians wonder if they are “done” when they enter their senior years. The Bible says senior saints have great purpose in God’s kingdom. Several verses point to this truth and provide guidance on how to treat seniors in our lives.

Isaiah 46:4

“And I will still be carrying you when you are old. Your hair will turn gray and I will still carry you.” This verse provides great encouragement to seniors who fear their lives no longer have purpose or who fear death. Being carried by God means He oversees our steps all our lives, not only when we’re young. It means He continues to guide us and show us what we can do to further His kingdom – even if that doesn’t involve “flashy” Christian service, such as overseas missions or singing on a praise team. This verse also reminds senior saints not to fear death; they will be carried home in God’s arms.

Job 12:12

“Wisdom belongs to the aged, and understanding to the old.” Many young people believe seniors are not wise. They associate old age with senility and inability to engage. In reality, even the frailest seniors have wisdom. They have lived much longer than the rest of us, and their experiences teach us what will reap good results in the world. Seniors also serve as valuable advisers.

Philippians 1:6

“For I am sure of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” Senior saints should never be made to feel set aside. As long as you are alive, God can use you. Younger believers should provide opportunities for seniors to continue kingdom work.
