Why Should I Vote?

giphy (1)There are many reasons to vote, yet you may wonder, is there a Biblical reason I should vote? Yes! The Bible is clear that God gives authority to rulers and that rulers are established by God (Romans 13). It is our responsibility to vote for authorities and then submit to those that God establishes. Philippians 2:3 tells us to not do things out selfish ambition, but to look out for interests of others. It is our responsibility to vote to help look out for the interests of others.

Edmund Burke once remarked, “All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.” It is our responsibility to vote for the candidate that we believe will serve the interests of our nation in a godly way. Psalm 34:13 reinforces this by instructing us to turn from evil and do good. We are entrusted with the right to vote in our republic knowing that our decisions will impact the future of our country and for many generations to come.

In Matthew 22:21, Jesus describes our response to what the government asks of us. We should honor the government authority by voting for the people we believe best represent our interests.

How Should We Respond to Politics?

In Titus 3, Paul instructs us on how to respond to quarrels and politics:

Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,  to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.

During this political season, we should be respectful, peaceful and gentle with people – even if they disagree with us political. Pray for our nation and our leaders.
