You Have What the Joneses Don’t Have

There’s no arguing: we live in a digital world. We can see activity from friends and family with texts, emails, and social media applications like Facebook and Instagram. Our information age helps us connect with others easier than ever, but it also makes room for some less-than-desirable feelings.

Many friends use their profiles to post pictures and videos of their material possessions or other worldly adventures. Scrolling through your newsfeed might show new cars, expensive homes, costly weddings, and extravagant vacations. Even when we’re born again through Christ, it can be hard to quell feelings of jealousy from seeing such things.

Finding Peace

Proverbs 14:30 says, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bone.” When we become jealous, we’re telling God that his efforts haven’t been enough. It’s not a healthy thought for a Christian, and allowing it to linger opens the door for other sinful mindsets. We must go against the nature of the flesh and pursue a life like his.

The most important thing to remember is that no worldly item can compare to the gift Jesus gave us: everlasting life. Even when it seems like our friends are better off than us, you already have the greatest blessing of all. Everything of this world is only temporary. New cars or fancy homes cannot be taken with death.

If you find yourself feeling envious, take a moment to picture what heaven has in store. He is preparing a mansion just for you, in a land where there is no pain. What more could you wish for?
