Easy Buffet Ideas for Your Next Church Event

Churches across America, and across the world, often call upon congregation members to bring meals to events–such as potlucks–in order to allow members and visitors the chance to break bread together. It’s a wonderful tradition, but sometimes it’s easy to get stuck in a rut! If you’ve got a church potluck coming up or are in charge of hosting a buffet event, here are a few ideas to get your creative juices going:

Breakfast Buffet

Almost everyone likes breakfast! A pancake dinner is always a hit and there are several things you can do help make it a little extra exciting with exciting sides such as:

  • Flavored syrup (such as blueberry)
  • Mini quiche
  • Toppings: apple, berries, butter with brown sugar, etc.
  • Hashbrown cassarole
  • Yogurt parfait
  • Fruit salad

BBQ Buffet

While in some parts of the United States BBQ means “something cooked outside” (such as hamburgers and hotdogs) and means a specific type of food in other parts, either way, a BBQ buffet is a great opportunity to get creative with sides. Here are a few easy ideas for you to try:

  • A chop salad
  • Corn on the cob
  • Mac and cheese
  • Pasta salad
  • Green beans

International Buffet

Sometimes it’s fun to have everyone bring something different so that guests can pick and choose the type of food they’d like to eat. Encourage congregationmembers to dig deep into their heritage and to share something that their ancestors might have eaten. However, for a few tried-and-true classics, here are a few ideas to try:

  • Spaghetti
  • Teriyaki meatballs and pineapple
  • Eggrolls
  • Tacos
  • Pizza

Dessert Buffet

The options are endless when it comes to dessert! Often it’s fun to do a “bake off” and allow people to vote for their favorite desserts. But whether you include the competitive element or not, here are some well-loved ideas:

  • Pies, full-size or hand pies
  • Cookies
  • Puddings
  • Cake, for a special twist, try making cake in a jar
