How to Be a Caretaker

The Bible emphasizes the importance of caretaking from the very beginning. Genesis 2:15 describes the Lord God as creating Adam, putting him in the Garden of Eden, and telling him to work and keep it. Taking care of the earth, God’s creatures, and others is a major part of being a Christian. Although being a caretaker can sometimes feel overwhelming, it is one of the most important and rewarding jobs one can have. When you need God to guide your hand as a caretaker, turn to these passages in your Bible for strength.

1 Chronicles 28:20

In this verse, David tells Solomon, his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work.” David tells his son to be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord is with him. He states that the Lord will not forsake Solomon until he finished the work for the service of the temple of the Lord. This passage gives caretakers the same inspirational message – although the work is difficult, do not be dismayed. God will help you if you look to Him for guidance to begin with. God carried our fathers through the services of their days, and now He will do the same for us. Wherever good work exists, so does God’s mercy.

Isaiah 43:1-2

Isaiah 43:1-2 says that the Lord will be with us as we “pass through the waters” and “walk through the fire.” The waters will not overflow us, nor will the fires scorch our flesh. Even as you prepare yourself for the daunting and difficult task of being someone’s caretaker, know that you never face your trials and tribulations alone. God is right there with you, taking on the obstacles in your way alongside you. This piece of scripture is inspirational and uplifting, reminding us all that God cares for us and will not let us face difficult circumstances alone.

Daniel 3:17

Every caretaker needs the occasional reminder that he or she is not alone on this journey. The life of caring for someone else can often feel lonely and full of duties and responsibilities. But though you walk through the fire, do not give up on God. Daniel 3:17 shows us Daniel’s friends facing the fiery furnace. His friends have complete faith that God will deliver them from the blazing fires, but they state even if He does not, they would still not serve (the king’s) gods. Strive to be like Daniel’s friends, and know in your heart that God will not let you burn, even in the darkest of times. Being a caretaker is no easy task, but you are not alone.

Proverbs 3:5-6

As a caretaker, there may come times when you doubt your abilities and your decisions. You may begin to rethink your duties as a caregiver, and start to wonder if you’ve done the right thing by accepting this difficult job. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us not to trust our own understanding of a situation, but to acknowledge God’s instead: “Trust the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” This passage assures us that God will make our paths straight. Find strength in your faith that God has your life under control. Even when you feel unsure, know you are part of God’s larger plan.

Psalm 51:10-12

Psalm 51:10-12 gives us a prayer we can send up to the Lord when we are in need of energy, support, and sustenance. It asks God to create in us pure hearts and steadfast spirits. It begs God not to cast us from His presence or take the Holy Spirit away from us. Finally, it requests the Lord to restore us to the joy of His salvation, and to grant us willing spirits to sustain us. Repeat Psalm 51:10-12 in your prayers to ask God to give you strength to continue your job as caretaker, and to remind you why you took on the task to begin with.

1 Timothy 1:12

Timothy experiences Jesus Christ saving him, leading to an outpouring of thankfulness: “I thank Christ Jesus our Lord…that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.” This passage is an excellent reminder that as caretakers, we should be grateful that God chose us to perform His works. Being a tool that Christ uses to spread His love and gospel is a main goal of every Christian. As a caretaker, you’re fulfilling this role by selflessly helping another person. Thank God for working through you – for appointing you to His service.

Whether you’re responsible for caring for strangers, your children, or your elderly parents, know that you are not alone in this difficult task. Always turn to God for guidance in times of hardship as a caretaker.
