How to Host a Block Party

The sun is out and summer is here! What better way to get to know your neighbors than to throw a block party. If this is something you’re interested in doing, but don’t know where to start, try these ideas and enjoy! This is a great way to get to know your neighbors in a low-pressure environment and might even open the door to having meaningful conversations about faith down the road.

After your party, come back and let us know how it went and what you’d do differently if you could do it again. Have you hosted a block party? Tell us what tips you have!

Get the Word Out There!

It’s important that people know they’re invited! Print out flyers and hand them out door-to-door  or try posting online if your neighborhood has a Facebook community group.

Don’t Do It All Yourself

Ask neighbors to help you organize this block party. Put someone in charge of decorations, someone else in charge of food, someone else in charge of invitations, etc. This way the burden of the party isn’t all on you and more people will feel invested in the event.

Reserve the Space

It doesn’t matter if the party is on your street or in a parking lot, you likely need permission to gather a group of people. Make sure you contact the city, a nearby park, the HOA, or whomever owns the land on which  you’re about to have this party!

Make it Simple

Potluck is the way to go when it comes to a block party. Ask neighbors to bring sides, drinks, and desserts to share. If you have enough generous people, you might not even have to have a main dish, although hot dogs and hamburgers are always a good idea!

Create an Activity for Children

Parents love going to events where their kids have something fun to do so that they don’t have to entertain them the entire time. This could be something as simple as setting up a sprinkler, but feel free to go crazy! Remember kids love things like ice cream, face painting, and getting to run around!
