What the Bible Says about Race

As you prepare to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, perhaps this is a good time to take the opportunity to review what the Bible has to say about race.

We know that the Bible is very clear when it comes to the subject of equality: we are all equal in the eyes of the Lord. Neither race, nor gender, nor anything else makes us more or less important to God. We are all created in his image.

John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have life everlasting.” This verse makes it very clear that Jesus’ sacrifice was made for every single human being on earth.

Additionally, in John 13:34, Jesus commands us, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

In his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. King cries out for this same basic principle: that we all treat each other equally, love each other, and for people of all skin colors to have equal opportunity to pursue the life that God has created for them.

As Christians we are called to break down barriers and radically love everyone. We know that if we actively or I actively take part in any system the degrades or demeans the humanity of another person, we are not heeding God’s call.

This week, and every day, take some time to pray about and listen to those who feel oppressed because of their race. Ask yourself and ask for the Spirit to reveal to you what Jesus would to do ensure that they are being treated as image bearers of God Almighty.

Here are some additional Bible verses that touch on the issue of race, for your personal study time.
